Default how much armor do monsters have?

is there a general rule to how much armor monsters have?

do elementalist monsters have 60 and warrior types have 80+20vs physical?

how much more armor do monsters get in HM? +20 across the board?

Depends on class and level. A level 10 Elementalist monster won't have 60AL, but a level 20 will. I'm sure wiki has some info on the progression and stats for +level 20.

For most monster the following formula applys: Monster Level * 3 + class bonus + race advantage/disadvantage.
For example, a level 23 warrior plant will have 69 armor, +20 armor against everything and +20 against physical damage (class bonus) and -20 vs slash and fire damage (race disadvantage).

However, some monster have a fixed armor level modified only bei race advantages/disadvantages.
For example, a Avalanche (ele) has 100 armor regardless of level, -24 armor vs fire damage and +40 armor vs cold damage.

I always thought the estimate was 1.5 AL per level over 20, guess I'm horribly wrong xP

It depends. In the first official strategy guide they went over all the prophecies monsters and somehow found out their armor. I think the highest monster in prophecies is some jade armor warrior boss with something like 140 armor.

Most monsters are 3*lvl + class_bonus. A fair number of monsters have "theme" bonuses or penalties (those Ice Golems don't much care for fire, but Destroyers don't much mind it). And then there's a few that just have oddball armor levels for no obvious reason.

Off Topic, while reading about the race advantages/disadvantages:

Wouldn't it be neat if you could actually do negative damage against pure forms. For example an Ice Ele would get healed by cold damage. Anyway not saying I want this to happen.. maybe in GW2
